Are your loved ones Hard-of-Hearing? - Quit Yelling about it!

Close-up of piano keys in black and white.

A serious piano student should have an instrument of 88 weighted keys so that they can properly train their fingers. Where the expense is not feasible or practical, please use these guidelines.

~Very young students can start off with any inexpensive keyboard (touch sensitive preferred) until interest is assured and fingers grow stronger $50-$200

~Early Intermediate students could get by with a semi-weighted 88-key keyboard ($200-$400 Alesis Recital – 88 Key Digital Piano Keyboard with Semi Weighted Keys )

~Serious students should have something with 88 fully weighted keys ($400-$5000 ex: YAMAHA P71 88-Key Weighted Action). I personally prefer Yamaha or, if you have room, an acoustic "real" piano.

NOTEWORKS App

A piano keyboard game teaching musical notes with a tractor and notes on a staff.

I recommend Noteworks to all my students, singers and pianists. Get the app on your phone or tablet to help with note recognition. It's lots of fun and is highly beneficial for all abilities. I use it myself to increase my ledger-line sight-reading skills. If you have a midi or usb capable keyboard you can hook it directly to your piano.

There is a free version to sample. It only uses the Treble (G) clef, which is plenty for singers. The paid version adds the bass (F) clef, which is needed for piano students. If you have a midi keyboard, you can even connect it to the app!

(Unfortunately, they have ceased support for the Android version)
